FDM 3D Printing

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is an additive manufacturing process that creates parts by extruding melted thermoplastic, layer by layer. It’s ideal for strong prototypes, functional parts and low-volume production runs. Material options include ABS, ASA, PETG, PET, PLA, TPU, PC and advanced composites like carbon fiber and glass-filled filaments — each chosen for strength, flexibility, or temperature resistance.

Advantages vs Disadvantages
of FDM 3D Printing

Advantages

FDM offers a fast and cost-effective solution for custom thermoplastic parts. It's ideal for prototyping and low-volume production thanks to short lead times and a broad range of materials suited for both functional and industrial use. While it’s not the best for ultra-fine detail or high heat applications, its affordability, speed, and material versatility make it a strong choice for most early-stage and practical engineering needs.

Disadvantages

While FDM is cost-effective and widely accessible, it does have some limitations. Parts may show visible layer lines, and extremely fine details can be harder to reproduce compared to higher-resolution technologies. Strength can also vary along the layer lines due to the nature of the printing process. However, with thoughtful design and finishing, these trade-offs are often minimal for most functional and prototyping applications.
